« I was very young; inexperienced as well. The invitation was extended to me because the engineer who had been tasked with the construction of a ocean swimming pool, Engineer Bernardo Ferrão, brother of the architect 'Távora, said to the Municipality: 'This is a delicate landscape issue, I need an architect on the team,' and so he invited me and helped me a lot, as he was an engineer with a lot of experience and sensitivity as well. I became acquainted with the project that had already been done, and in conversation with the engineer and the Municipality, I made an initial proposal. Instead of making a conventional, enclosed, concrete pool, like the project envisaged, I proposed to the engineer that the limit of the tank should remain as much as possible in line with the rocks. What was there was a well, a natural pool, which failed, due to topographical issues, in some points, therefore it didn't contain the water. What I proposed was to build some walls, which were already designed, where the rocks were not enough. And so it began, the project. A complicated project due to the weather variability, but at the same time, for that reason, very interesting and for me it was an experience that couldn't have been better for a young inexperienced architect. » - Álvaro Siza
