Gift Box Ai Weiwei: Entrelaçar/Intertwine, Vol. I and II
To accompany Ai Weiwei's exhibition, Serralves published a bilingual edition (Portuguese / English) in two volumes.
The first book focuses on the work process of the works Iron Roots and Pequi Tree, which reflect the artist's interest and concern with environmental issues and the deforestation of the Atlantic Forest. It includes a selection of essays by Bob Bloomfield, Robert Macfarlane, Günther Vogt, and a text specially commissioned from Professor Jorge Paiva.
The second book focuses on the presentation of the artist's exhibition in Serralves. It includes views of the assembly and installation of the works in the central room of the Museum and the Park, namely the work Pequi Tree, presented for the first time in Serralves. It also includes an unprecedented conversation between the artist and curators Philippe Vergne and Paula Fernandes as well as an unpublished poem by Yang Lian.
Ai Weiwei (Beijing, 1957) is an artist, thinker and activist whose artistic practice addresses pressing issues of our time. He is one of the leading cultural figures of his generation and an example of free speech in China and internationally.
The exhibition Entrelaçar/Intertwine by Ai Weiwei, on display in Serralves from July 2021 to June 2022, reflects the artist's concern for the environment and the deforestation of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, in particular.
