Explore your artistic expression with our exclusive pencil, a practical tool for your drawings, writings, and notes, inspired by Luisa Cunha's sound art É o que é/It is what it is, 2023.

This pencil with a vibrant shade of dark green, repeating the phrase "it is what it is" in light green, is more than just a simple object—it's a collectible piece that is part of the collection derived from the exhibition "Anagramas Improváveis - Obras da Coleção de Serralves."

Developed in close collaboration with the award-winning artist, this pencil and our entire collection of items pay tribute to this unique sound art piece created exclusively for the new Álvaro Siza Wing at the Serralves Museum.

Let yourself be inspired by the creativity of this collaboration, collect pencils from the É o que é/It is what it is line, or gift one to a friend who shares your appreciation for authentic artistic expression.

É o que é/It is what it is, 2023 is is the first artwork encountered by visitors of 'Anagramas Improváveis' (Unlikely Anagrams), the exhibition featuring works from the Serralves Collection that inaugurates the new wing of the Serralves Museum (Álvaro Siza Wing) as a space dedicated to the presentation of Serralves' collections and archives.

Representative of Luisa Cunha's artistic production – known primarily for sound works – this artwork was commissioned specifically for this space and consists of the repetition of the phrase that gives it its title. Despite being strictly auditory, the artwork – which can be heard in the passageway between the museum's old space and its new extension – takes advantage of the space's architecture, its relationship with the exterior, and the movement of visitors. The phrase, spoken by the artist (Cunha always employs her own voice), appeals to a universal sentiment – a kind of ironic resignation; and this coincidence between singularity and universality underlies the collection of multiples and merchandise conceived from the artwork. Let everyone display, carry (or even write with) objects that serve as a kind of thought bubble that everyone, without exception, has had: IT IS WHAT IT IS.

Luisa Cunha (Lisbon, 1949) is one of the most unique and innovative artists in the Portuguese art scene. Revealed in the 1990s, her work developed across various mediums, including sculpture, sound, photography, and video, always starting from linguistic statements.
