Rui Chafes studied Sculpture at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, continuing his studies in Germany, at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. German literature and art, mainly associated with the medieval period and Romanticism, are references that permeate the artist's work.

The relationship with certain art from the past reveals his interest in detecting what in artistic creation is essential, immutable, transversal to various times. This interest is also revealed in his choice of materials, in which iron is privileged precisely because of its immutability.
