“Why does the idea of the triangle surge? Frankly, I do not know why. Afterwards, we can see that the opening at the base and at the top may suggest that there is a different route for each side. A triangle is a space for distrubition, not a space for exhibition.” - Álvaro Siza
Limited edition of 100 copies, all numbered and hand-signed by Álvaro Siza.
Total dimensions: 43,5 x 43,5 cm
The Álvaro Siza Wing is a building that is fully integrated into the landscape of Serralves Park – neither does it impose itself nor does it exist as an impotent architectural gesture. Instead, it represents an expression of natural growth, like a new branch growing from a tree.
It demonstrates two forms of collecting: on the one hand, it establishes Serralves as the place with perhaps the most important collection of buildings by the architect Álvaro Siza. Not only does it underline the institution’s mission in terms of architecture, but it equally emphasizes effective construction and not just mere curation; On the other hand, the building is part of a “built collection”, meaning it will also house collections of works of art: the Serralves Collection, the CACE Collection, the BPP Collection, the collections on deposit (FLAD, Leal Rios, among many others), which comprise more than 4. 500 works of art, and architectural archives, such as those of the architect Álvaro Siza.
In this new building, there will be exhibitions dedicated to the Serralves Collection - which will be on permanent but dynamic display - and to architecture, one of the strategic axes of Serralves' mission.
Álvaro Siza is one of the most emblematic architects of the 20th century, and one of the names with which Portugal is associated in any part of the world, winner of the Pritzker Prize in 1992. It was in 1991 that Álvaro Siza was invited to design the Museum of Art Contemporary by Serralves, which opened in 1999.
In 2019, he completed the architectural project for the Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira, in 2021 the restoration and adaptation of the Casa de Serralves and in 2023 the construction of the new building for the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art - the Álvaro Siza Wing. To this day, they maintain a collaborative relationship within the instituition and its programme.
