"I lowered my head, my eyes glued to my new dress, it was white with little flowers and black dots. I must have been very small when Grandpa Jacinto died. Then I only remember the self-portrait, all the photographs he took. I especially liked it when Grandma Laura showed them to me, commenting: Uncle Luiz when he was little, Mom as a baby in the garden at the beach in her arms, here she is grown up with friends who came over to play in the afternoons and some boarders from Grandma's school, who spent the summer here, like Berta, Irene, and Isaura, three sisters who had come from São Tomé.

The farm, the grape harvest, the sugar cane harvest, the garden. I added: how the palm tree grew! There was a banana tree, many mango trees, a whole banana grove, a bright red cardinal flower and another one with finely cut petals hanging down, a guava tree, a tree that bore pink flowers, I loved putting them in my mouth, they tasted like tissue paper... An enormous custard apple tree as big as a house, wild violets in the shade on the path to the haystack attracting beetles in the evening, a privet tree by the wall, myrtle to protect from the southwest wind; the fig tree - with white figs with honey at the beak - near the dovecote, the carob tree by the entrance gate, dark cherries, a jacaranda, jasmine, orange-blossomed bushes, which were filled with orange flowers by Christmas. And the camphor tree! Huge, planted by Uncle Luiz. To go to the beach we went down the rock and the sandy ground, avoiding the prickly pear bushes, through the wild fennel, rock lavender, white aromas. We crossed the banana trees down below and we were on the beach, so vast, so wide. Beautiful because it was empty!

On windy days, we heard the noise of the sea dragging the rocks. It rolled them day and night, years, centuries, until bits of basalt became so smooth and soft. A rock is a masterpiece! Who hasn't managed to walk barefoot over the rocks, sometimes jumping, sometimes balancing on the bigger ones. Today, like a cluttered room, Praia Formosa has filled up with buildings."
