With a curatorial introduction by João Ribas and the preface written by Michael Ward Stout (President of the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation), the publication reproduces the 159 works of the exhibition ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE: PICTURES, organized by the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in September 2018.

The exhibition catalog brings together, for the first time in Portuguese, one of the most complete revisions of Mapplethorpe's work by the art historian Jonathan K. Nelson, a short but penetrating preface by Susan Sontag to one of the artist's portrait albums and a conversation with American writer and filmmaker and artist Gary Indiana.

Robert Mapplethorpe (New York, 1946–1989, Boston) created some of the most iconic, controversial and surprising images in contemporary photography.

Robert Mapplethorpe: Pictures, an exhibition organized in close collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, brings together 159 works from his entire career, from the first collages and polaroids to photographs of flowers, nudes, portraits and sexual images that made Mapplethorpe one off the most notable photographers of the 20th century.
