Started by the influential gallery owner Ileana Sonnabend (1914–2007), the Sonnabend Collection is regarded as one of the most relevant collections of American and European art of the second half of the 20th century. This book presents the more than 60 works on display, by some of the protagonists of pop art, minimalism, arte povera, nouveau réalisme, post-minimalism and conceptual art.
In conversation with Suzanne Cotter, Director of the Serralves Museum, António Homem, curator of the exhibition and editor of this book, explains the criteria that guided the construction of the Collection and its exhibition history.
This catalog was developed within the scope of the exhibition "The Sonnabend Collection: Half a Century of European and American Art. Part I", an important exhibition dedicated to the Sonnabend Collection, presented in Serralves from February 6 to May 8, 2016.
