André Cepeda: A Ponte / The Bridge
Member Price
André Cepeda was the artist invited by Serralves to intervene in the Santa Cruz do Bispo Prison as part of the Janelas Para O Mundo Educational Service project. Interested in getting to know the context in which he was challenged to work, Cepeda was authorised by the prison's management to speak at length with some of the inmates and to photograph the prison's interior and exterior spaces. The conversations resulted in two projects: an event in which they were given a voice and a stage (rehearsed by singer Ana Deus and musician Paulo Praça, the inmates danced, sang and read texts - some of their own making) and a composition of photographs designed and produced specifically for the glazed corridor that separates the spaces where visitors are welcomed from the tightly closed and guarded spaces dedicated to life in confinement. The images that make up the corridor are a mixture of photographs from the artist's archives and others that he acquired from public banks. The images refer to very diverse but universal memories and emotional states, making passing through the corridor a transformative inner journey.
This book aims to document this project and show André Cepeda's selection of images to the wider public. It will also include an essay by Ricardo Nicolau, curator of the Serralves Museum.
