Catalog launched during the exhibition "Splitting, Cutting, Writing, Drawing, Eating… Gordon Matta-Clark", on display at the Serralves Foundation Museum from May 5th to September 3rd 2017.

Structured by a series of constructive and destructive verbs — cut, separate, write, draw, eat, etc. — which define Gordon Matta-Clark's unique mode of architectural production — which the artist called "making space without building it" —, the exhibition and catalog addressed the gestural, formal and social aspects of a series of literal and metaphorical actions taken to in places of urban reconstruction and degradation, or in marginal and economically and socially depressed contexts.

In addition to photographs, drawings and documents related to the artist's pioneering work, exhibited in collaboration with the Canadian Center for Architecture, Montreal, a selection of works by other artists is featured, including Ed Rusha, Dan Graham, Alvin Baltrop and Emily Roysdon.

"There is a poetic side to Matta-Clark's intervention and work, in the organic relationship he establishes with his own body as an artist but also with the community", Delfim Sardo
