Yesterday as Today is the fourth and final volume of Manoel de Oliveira and the Portuguese Cinema, an exhibition and publishing project centred on the filmmaker’s personal archive, held at the Serralves Foundation. Dedicated to the final years of Manoel de Oliveira’s work, between 2002 and 2015, this volume revisits a period marked by extraordinary creative vitality, continual formal reinvention, and the director’s firmly established international recognition.
Bringing together texts and contributions by António Preto and João Mário Grilo — editors of the series and curators of the exhibitions — as well as by José Bértolo, Paulo Cunha, Pedro Crispim, Carlos Natálio, Daniel Ribas, Clara Rowland and Ricardo Vieira Lisboa, alongside contributions from the CineLab research team — Irene Aparício, Susana Nascimento Duarte, Liliana Rosa and Susana Viegas —, the publication sheds light on materials, working processes and lines of thought that are essential to understanding one of the freest and most singular phases of Oliveira’s filmography. Together with the previous three volumes, this publication constitutes an important contribution to the study of Manoel de Oliveira’s work and to a deeper understanding of his relationship with contemporary Portuguese cinema.
