The works presented in the exhibition Sussurro highlight Maurizio Cattelan's fascination with history—its traumas, transformations, and iconic figures. The artist is interested in moments of transition: between childhood and adulthood, between life and death, between laughter and tears, or between different historical periods. These ambiguous and fleeting states are central to his visual language, often transformed into iconic images. In Sussurro, the integration of art, architecture, and landscape invites a deeper and more immersive experience of Cattelan's approach to art.
With a visual essay by Maurizio Cattelan and essays by Cecilia Alemani, Bernard Blistène, and Philippe Vergne, curator of the exhibition, this book reveals three different and knowledgeable perspectives on the work of this great artist, who presents a cast of characters ranging from historical figures and self-portraits to friends and acquaintances, children, objects, places, and familiar images, as well as a bestiary in the unique setting of the Serralves Villa.
