Material Evidence brings together a group of artists who have explored materiality as a contenant, with an intention. The nature of this intentionality might differ from one artist to the other and outline how these artists are processing their world and navigating the responsibilities of producing a sign, a trace.
The artists in the exhibition were all born after 1984. They come from different cultural backgrounds: Lebanon and Greece, the United States, Sweden, Paris and Palestine, Portugal, the UK, and Belgium. Under different circumstances, I have encountered their works over the last five years and little by little connected some of their dots, seeing communalities and contrasting their differences. Their work, one way or another, examines and takes stock of personal histories, the formation of memories, entropy and the aggregation of identities, the granularity of information, the nature of estrangement and the reorganization of the ordinary, and a re-evaluation of knowledge.
This book brings together an essay by the exhibition curator, Philippe Vergne, and visual essays by the artists, accompanied by their biographies, written by Filipa Loureiro.
