A masterpiece of contemporary political literature
A masterpiece of contemporary political literature
Escritos da Resistência brings together two works, Escritos Políticos and Escritos do Exílio, which correspond to one of the most dramatic periods in Mário Soares' life. "A DIFFICULT PATH that led me from political deportation in São Tomé (...) to participation in the pseudo-elections of October 1969 and, soon after, to exile in France the following year," he wrote in the preface to the book published in Rio de Janeiro.
These works cover the final decade of the Estado Novo, marking the end of António Salazar's government and the subsequent rule of Marcelo Caetano. The chronological sequence between the two justifies their joint reissue, as the author himself regarded the volumes as sequential.
It is particularly intriguing to compare his writing under the constraints of censorship with his writing in freedom, as well as his stance at the end of Salazar's era and toward his successor, Marcelo Caetano. Both works are evidently tools of political intervention, closely aligned with the affirmation of a socialist and democratic political agenda. They reflect two phases in the organization of the socialist movement, each shaped by markedly different political contexts.
These writings also serve as a response to the political attacks directed at Mário Soares. This brief introduction to Escritos da Resistência is an invitation to delve into these texts, which are essential for a deeper understanding of Mário Soares' political thought and activity between 1965 and 1974, the final decade of the aging Estado Novo regime.
