On the occasion of the exhibition "Chegar Sem Partir" by Rui Chafes, the Serralves Foundation publishes an edition composed of two volumes.
The exhibition Arriving without leaving by Rui Chafes is accompanied by a publication consisting of two volumes, the first of which, features texts written by the exhibition curators and especially commissioned contributions by authors who have been following the artist’s career over the last few decades: Armin Zweite, Doris von Drathen, Maria Filomena Molder, Nuno Crespo, and Ulrich Loock. Furthermore, it includes a previously unpublished photographic essay which shows us, through the eyes of designer Pedro Falcão, images of the artist’s studio and his working methods.
The second volume, schedule to be launched in September, offers a vast array of images from the exhibition and of the works themselves, immersing the reader in the Museum and its surroundings.
Rui Chafes studied Sculpture at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, continuing his studies in Germany, at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Germanic literature and art, mainly associated with the medieval period and Romanticism, are references that permeate the artist's work. The relationship with certain art from the past betrays his interest in detecting what in artistic creation is essential, immutable, transversal to various times. This interest is also revealed in his choice of materials, in which iron is favored precisely because of its immutability.
