Catalog published on the occasion of the exhibition Void*: Júlio Pomar & Julião Sarmento at the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar, from 28 October 2016 to 12 March 2017.
The exhibition Void*: Júlio Pomar & Julião Sarmento is conceived, since its inception, as a specific intervention in the Atelier-Museum space, where Júlio Pomar and Julião Sarmento, through paintings and drawings, explore the concept of void — English term which can be understood as an empty or emptied space; something that disappears into space; that is experienced as loss or deprivation; a gap or opening. Given the plurality of meanings that the concept admits, it could be said that the Void* exhibition materializes — paradoxically — a centrifugal vacuum, seeking to subtract the spectator from the usual associations with which he is usually faced in an exhibition, inserting him rather in an ambiguous formulation, necessary to achieve the aesthetic fact. […]
Julião Sarmento shows a series of works on canvas and on paper — records or inscriptions of the work in his atelier —, with various literary references, without any figuration. Júlio Pomar shows a series of works, paintings and drawings, made mainly in the 1960s, for example paintings on the Paris metro, body fights, among other more and less abstract works, drawings of the natural, illustrations for books and projects for paintings — works that, in the exhibition, were valued for their components and formal or compositional intensities.
