The exhibition Júlio Pomar and Cabrita Reis: On small things [June 1-October 8, 2017] is part of the exhibition program of the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar which, every year, combines the work of Júlio Pomar with that of other artists, in order to establish new relationships between the painter's work and contemporaneity.

In the exhibition, Júlio Pomar and Cabrita Reis, through objects, sculptures and assemblages, explore compositions in different materials, revealing that small things or objects can contain large gestures. It is about using pieces or fragments of materials, almost without the intervention of the artists, as if the raw materials of the works were appropriated by the authors due to the associations they potentiate and, combined with each other, without the need for modeling or resorting to another process of sculptural work. Thus, although there is no actual modeling of materials, the artistic gesture is shown in the most elementary acts of selecting, composing and associating materials collected from the context or surrounding reality, giving them new life and giving them meanings. Thus, artists talk about small things and big gestures – artistic gestures, attributing meaning to the simplest things – as if it were possible for them, through an alchemical act, to turn stone into gold. This is in fact what they do by appropriating materials found on the street and transforming them into works of art. Therefore, in this exhibition «the little thing» is presented as a metaphor for the great deed, the power of the demiurge: the creative act. […]

As a whole, through the works, the exhibition reveals moments in the biography of each artist, in the way they look around them. It reveals how they think about the intimate and small things that have meaning for each one, showing that the small events in art and in life can be the most important; and making it clear that the strength of the works does not depend on the size, but on the intention of each gesture and each look.
