Decorativo, Apenas? Júlio Pomar e a Integração das Cores

- «A decorative motif, just…» - Isn't it true that this is often heard? Sometimes in the mouth of an architect, when requesting the collaboration of the painter or sculptor, sometimes in the mouth of one of these; or with a hidden air of apology, or with the niceties of the gypsy who foists on an old donkey. In passing, it is possible to say that it is also possible to hear it said with innocence, since innocence in terms of art is much more common than it is painted.
From misstep to misstep, an impoverished conception of the decorative has been consolidated. The waitress's braids were cut off: making it "modern" became putting 10 where 100 used to be, and using a few cosmetics at will, without first washing your face. How many holy souls could thus find rest! And in this way, «decorative» came to mean ruffle, stamping doll, obligatorily inexpressive rustling. […]
I believe that, among us, the decorative work has been pushed, voluntarily or involuntarily, to the category of Parque Mayer of the arts. Aside from rare honest attempts, what do we see? A poorly tuned choir in which conformism, the delicous, the thousand times worn out solutions come together. What makes so many interpret the decorative as a kind of shameful disease, and not, after all, as the most vivid expression of the art of our time. [Julio Orchard]
