This exhibition, particularly difficult to assemble due to the plurality of works available and the amount possible to show in the Atelier-Museum, was an extremely challenging moment for the museum team, which, in a way, brought closer not only the friends and by the painter, as well as Júlio Pomar himself. His face, and above all his smile, was reflected in her through the other countenances!

The exhibition «The imprecise drawing of each human face, reflected! Portraits by Júlio Pomar», curated by Sara Antónia Matos and Pedro Faro, focuses on the way in which Júlio Pomar thought about the artistic genre of portrait over the more than seventy years that make up the painter's career. The exhibition thus sought to bring together portraits from different stages of creation, from neo-realism, in the 1940s, to 2018, the year he died. Since it is not possible to show, in a single exhibition, in the space of the Atelier-Museum, all the works carried out in this field by Júlio Pomar, we sought to select portraits that marked the passage between «phases» and less-seen, less iconic portraits, as they are approaches previous works, or even studies of the best-known works. In this way, it was possible to cover a greater number of personalities. […]

There was also another criterion that guided the selection of works for the exhibition and which, with few exceptions, when this did not harm the inseparable relationship between painting and drawing, was not to repeat portraits of the same personality, especially when they belonged to the same stylistic period. . […]

Portrait painting and drawing account for the various relationships that the artist established with people in his most personal circle of contact, and with notable figures from different domains of Portuguese society, from artists, their “peers” and companions, to writers. , politicians and fado protagonists. These approaches from the last decades were gathered on the upper floor of the Atelier-Museum, creating an atlas of connections, topped by the allegorical figure of the «Republic», starring the face of Cristina Branco. In addition, the exhibition includes several self-portraits from different moments in the artist's life, showing his advancing age.
