This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition «Tudo é Outra Coisa» by Rui Chafes, curated by Filipa Oliveira, commissioned and produced by the Municipality of Almada, which took place at Convento dos Capuchos, between 16 March and 19 October 2019
[…] What this exhibition has taught me is surely a profound notion of humility and an extreme respect for the sacred or natural space in which Rui Chafes' sculptures take place. I felt it in other exhibitions, in other spaces, for example in the church of São Cristóvão or in Jardim da Sereia (where my name and Rui's happened to intersect, long before we met).
But I don't believe in chance, to be honest. About ten years ago, a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to keep Rui's cell phone number. He told her no; if we had to get to know each other, it would happen naturally, without either of us looking for the other. So it was. So, I believe, it will always have happened in this wasted land, where so many times our true contemporaries died long ago — but they revive in us through gestures, words, metal syllables, silences.
