Fernando Pernes, “Dizer a imagem”, an anthology of critical texts by the most iconic Portuguese and foreign artists, which were dispersed throughout numerous periodicals that have since disappeared, and whose selection was made by Miguel von Hafe Pérez, who collaborated very closely with Legs.

This book is not only a tribute by Serralves to its first Artistic Director, but a heartfelt recognition of the figure of Pernes who tirelessly was the great driving force behind Serralves' project.

It is impossible to understand the recent history of the national institutional and museological panorama without contextualizing its long path to change a panorama lacking public structures dedicated to contemporary art, its primordial action for the genesis of the project of a contemporary art museum in the Porto, his continued and finally realized ambition of setting a democratic time with a democratization of art. 

Fernando Pernes, the first artistic director of the Serralves Foundation between 1987 and 1996, was a leading figure in art criticism in Portugal. He distinguished himself by his qualities as a pedagogue, promoter of modern and contemporary art and was one of the exhibition programmers most attentive to the new Portuguese artists who started to appear in the late 1960s.
