The most significant work of the last decade in the career of architect Álvaro Siza, winner of the 1992 Pritzker Prize. On a riverside plateau, in the Roman city of Chaves, in the interior of his native country, Siza designed the Nadir Afonso Museum. Between the modernity of raising the building from the ground — over the water — and the vernacular outline of its plan, the building reveals the exceptional mastery of this architect and the contemporary condition of architecture itself.

The book includes an essay by Paulo Tunhas, a critical essay by Jorge Figueira, a photographic essay by João Carmo Simões, the architect’s descriptive statement, an overview of sketches and photographs, a list of selected works, a selected bibliography, a list of materials, project dimensions, an editor’s note, biographies, and a fold-out section containing the building’s technical drawings, construction sections and construction photographs.

Book co-edited by João Carmo Simões.
