Mercado do Bolhão is a collective record of the building’s rehabilitation process, bringing together multiple perspectives on a landmark intervention in Porto’s urban landscape.

This is the fifth volume in the NMB series — a collection created and edited by Nuno Miguel Borges, dedicated to Projetos de Arquitetura. It serves as a collective memory, offering insights into both the process and significance of the Bolhão Market restoration. A book to read and cherish on your finest shelf.

The editorial project began in 2015, during the final months of the market’s activity before construction works began, and continued until 2023, culminating in a photographic record of the restored and fully operational building. Over these eight years, the rehabilitation was closely followed, allowing for the creation of a future memory of this essential intervention in Porto’s architectural heritage.

The book includes a photographic essay by André Cepeda, featuring 83 images that document the “before,” “during,” and “after” of the restoration, creating a visual bridge between Bolhão’s past and present. It also features an interview by Nuno Miguel Borges with architect Nuno Valentim, discussing key design decisions, challenges faced during the rehabilitation, and the outcomes achieved.
