Perhaps the most respected critic globally, British professor Kenneth Frampton catapulted Siza's visibility with his book Critical History of Modern Architecture. In continuity, they have been building new cultural identities: regionalist, in the house of Fernando Távora; Europeanist, in the first Mies van der Rohe Prize; universalist, in the first Prize of the Americas; and so forth.

Kenneth Frampton is an architect, critic, historian and professor of architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture and Planning at Columbia University in New York, having also worked at Princeton. He studied architecture at the Guildford School of Art and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, and is the author of several books and specialized texts.
