The book “Models of Democracy” replicates the conventions associated with bestsellers that synthesize, simplify and make great themes accessible to all readers.

It is a collaboration between Ricardo Valentim (Loulé, 1978) and the writer and art critic Stephen Squibb, whom Valentim asked to write short texts that praise the publishing qualities of his fictional authors, obeying the techniques of editorial marketing and filling a substantial part of its front and back covers.

The index corresponds to expectations, announcing introduction, chapters, notes and annexes. However, when we leaf through the book, we notice that the pages are practically all blank, with the exception of a few illustrations based on objects built by the artist and whose relationship with democracy is not evident.

The status of this book is made even more complex by the use of library cataloging systems - stamp, spine label, loan card pasted on the last page -, which means that the reader who accesses it through a public library you will be confronted with these rules in duplicate: two stamps, two labels, two loan forms.

Valentim's artistic practice subtly analyzes cultural conventions and protocols for the presentation of art. Photographs, films, performance conferences, posters, leaflets and artist books give centrality and autonomy to everything that is considered an appendix in artistic production: the room sheets and scripts produced by museums and galleries, leaflets that communicate the parallel programming to exhibitions, conferences that expand the spectrum of issues associated with them, posters announcing film cycles curated by artists.
