Georg Baselitz is a German painter, sculptor and graphic artist known for his Neo-Expressionist paintings rendered with distinctive brushwork and often exhibited upside down. Born in 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, Germany, he renamed himself after his hometown in 1961. Inspired by folkloric and archetypal subjects, his practice explores what it means to be a German artist in the postwar era. He often uses bold colors and forceful brushstrokes to create his large-scale works. Since 1969 he has been painting his compositions upside down, this novel format is a way for him of emptying form of its content, navigating between abstraction and figuration. He currently lives and works in Munich, Germany. Today, Baselitz’s works are included in the collections of the Guggenheim Bilbao, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Berlinsche Galerie, among others.
