Founded in 1824, Fábrica de Porcelana da Vista Alegre was the first industrial unit dedicated to the production of porcelain in Portugal. The spirit and persistence of the founder José Ferreira Pinto Basto, a prominent figure in Portuguese society in the 19th century, an audacious merchant farm owner, was important to the success of this industrial undertaking.
More than a factory space, Vista Alegre is today an architectural ensemble of undeniable interest, a repository of social and artistic memories that are fundamental to the construction of a national identity.
