Poster depicting the sculpture “1968” alluding to the exhibition “D'après Fibonacci and Things Outside”, on display at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art from September 15, 2017 to January 7, 2018.

"D'après Fibonacci and things abroad" brought together paintings, drawings and sculptures by the influential Portuguese artist Jorge Pinheiro (Coimbra, 1931). Based on an idea of Cabrita Reis, the exhibition was presented with an installation drawing conceived by architect Eduardo Souto Moura , Pritzker Prize 2011.

The show continued the program dedicated to the work of relevant artists from the 20th century, still unknown to a wide audience outside Portugal.

The close dialogue between Jorge Pinheiro and Cabrita Reis led to the selection of 80 works dating from specific periods in Pinheiro's career, from the 1960s to the present, in which figurative painting and the languages of concrete art and conceptual abstraction coincide.

The exhibition also included a new sculpture produced especially for the exhibition and the context of the Museum's architecture, by Álvaro Siza.

Jorge Pinheiro (Coimbra, 1931) is recognized as one of the most influential names in the Portuguese artistic context of the second half of the 20th century, joining the famous group “Os 4 20s” in 1968. Over a career of more than 50 years, Jorge Pinheiro has been developing a work of profound theoretical and intellectual coherence translated into a visually diverse body of work, in which figurative painting and concrete and conceptual abstraction coexist.
