This is part of the exclusive collection of premium tote bags and t-shirts from the exhibition Beleza apesar de tudo (“Beauty Despite Everything”) by Aires Mateus. Each piece reflects the exhibition’s poetic and minimalist spirit, portraying twenty years of spatial investigation through five thematic areas: garden, matter, time, places and geographies.
Beleza apesar de tudo is not an anthological or retrospective exhibition, but rather an exploration of the spatial investigations developed by the architects Aires Mateus over the past twenty years. It does not focus on presenting imagined, designed and/or built projects, but instead reveals how specific spatial ideas have guided the duo’s work.
Brothers Manuel Aires Mateus (1963) and Francisco Aires Mateus (1964) founded the Aires Mateus studio in 1988. With 36 years of experience, the studio currently brings together around 50 professionals. In the academic field, they have collaborated with multiple universities since 1986; they currently teach at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (since 1998) and at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, Switzerland (since 2001). Their work has received numerous national and international awards and has been featured in major international exhibitions, such as the Venice Architecture Biennale. The studio’s practice reflects on the role of memory and knowledge, and on the relationship between the physical and cultural realms. It seeks to address all scales that surround us, guided by the desire to draw. It explores the permanence of forms and materiality — and the continuity of time.
