Developed in close collaboration with the award-winning artists, this tote bag is a tribute to the circus Palhaço Rico Fode Palhaço Pobre, 2017, one of the most important moments in the artistic career of João Pedro Vale and Nuno Alexandre Ferreira.
The circus, an event of extraordinary complexity, proved the duo's ability to move between mediums, from writing to staging characters, from sculpture to scenery, from exhibition to performance, and above all to bring people together and mobilise them. Their projects, whether conceived for a museum context or a stage, are inseparable and complementary; they contaminate each other, giving rise to one another and forming part of a life story dedicated to art, culture and the causes they defend.
The Serralves Museum is presenting the first anthological exhibition of the work of the Portuguese artists, João Pedro Vale & Nuno Alexandre Ferreira. The exhibition, held in Serralves Villa, will combine a broad selection of works by the two artists, including new works specially conceived for this occasion.
The artists have been exploring a series of topics as the relationship between folklore and national identity, fascism and culture in the former regime, the negationisms and policies of memory, violence and silencing perpetuated by dictatorships, but also, in a continuous and relevant manner, the impact of HIV/AIDS and the stigma and prejudice towards the LGBTQIA+ community.
