Que Sais-Je

The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art began collecting artists’ books in 1999. Since then the Collection has continued to grow, both in number and scope, and numbers today over 5,000 artists’ books and editions.
Que sais-je? draws its title from the famous French pocket encyclopaedia initiated in 1941 and designed to introduce to the general public a wide range of subjects. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the CAPC, musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, and at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, this publication features a selection of 26 books and editions by 21 artists that underline how this medium presents alternative perspectives on what it means to produce knowledge.
It includes an essay by Serralves curator Ricardo Nicolau and reprints of texts by Chus Martínez, Head of the Institute of Art at the Academy of Art and Design in Basel and Clive Phillpot, writer, curator and former Director of the Library at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
