Mel Bochner - When Color Changes

This monograph accompanied the first major retrospective exhibition of Mel Bochner’s (Pittsburgh, USA, 1940) work in Europe. More than 150 images are complemented by unpublished essays: Achim Borchardt-Hume analyzes the correlation between colour and language in the artist’s recent work; Briony Fer explores the artist’s relationship with the theoretical and historical problems of abstraction; João Fernandes addresses the evolution of language in Bochner’s oeuvre; Mark Godfrey underlines the ability of his sculpture to question the essential nature of perception and thought; and Ulrich Wilmes outlines the trajectory, ‘filled with detours and dead ends’, which led the artist from abstract expressionism to his latest series of ‘thesaurus paintings’. Some of the artist’s seminal writings are also republished.
