Ahlam Shibli: Phantom Home

Published on the occasion of the first major retrospective of the work of Ahlam Shibli (Palestine, 1970), this catalogue reproduces all sixty-eight images of Death (2011−12), her most recent photographic series specifically conceived for the show. Further developing the survey on the problematic notion of home that runs through the whole of Shibli’s work, the new series testifies to a specific form of Palestinian society’s resistance to disappearance: the celebration and perpetuation of the absent. In addition to a selection of images from Shibli’s previous series, the book features an essay by anthropologist Esmail Nashif on the deep entrenchment of death in Palestinian life and a critical review of the artist’s oeuvre by TJ Demos.
