Paula Rego (Lisbon, 1935) is one of the great realist artists of the contemporary era, who follows in the tradition of Goya, Hogarth and Beckmann. Her works, that are both figurative and narrative, are never conservative and address provocative issues, such as the condition of women and sexuality. Born in Lisbon in 1935, Paula Rego has lived in London since the 1960s, and is considered to be one of Portugal’s best known artists. The Serralves Museum organised a major solo exhibition of her work in 2004, presenting a selection of works produced since 1996, focusing in particular on the relationship between her paintings and drawings, as well as construction of her unique and idiosyncratic fictional situations. The core of Paula Rego's works held in the Serralves Collection, produced since the 1960s to the present day, will be the starting point for a monographic exhibition that, after a 15-year interval, will see her return to Serralves.
